Top Weekend Getaways from Vancouver, BC

One of our favorite things about Vancouver is how quickly you can leave the city behind and find yourself somewhere that feels completely different. Within a couple of hours you can be hiking beneath towering mountains, relaxing beside the ocean, wandering around an island community or soaking in hot springs.

Having spent a lot of time living in and exploring British Columbia, we’ve taken advantage of plenty of these escapes ourselves. Some work perfectly for a spontaneous overnight trip, while places like Tofino and the Okanagan are better when you can stretch the weekend to two or three nights.

Whether you’re looking for mountains, beaches, wineries, hiking, good food or simply somewhere quiet to disappear for a couple of days, these are some of our favorite weekend getaways from Vancouver.

For wine, head to the Okanagan. And if you can stretch the weekend to three nights, Tofino is well worth the extra travel time.

Our Favorite Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

1. Whistler, BC

Whistler Weekend Getaways from Vancouver
Whistler Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

Best for: Mountains, skiing, hiking, biking and romantic weekends
Travel time: About 1.5 to 2 hours
Recommended stay: 2 nights

Whistler may be the most obvious weekend getaway from Vancouver, but there’s a reason it remains one of our favorites. Even the drive is part of the trip, following the Sea-to-Sky Highway past Howe Sound and through some of the most dramatic scenery close to Vancouver.

Winter is all about skiing and snowboarding at Whistler Blackcomb, but Whistler is every bit as good during the warmer months. Summer brings hiking, mountain biking, golf and lake days at places like Lost Lake and Alta Lake. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola is also worth doing if you want the big mountain views without spending an entire day hiking.

One thing we particularly like about Whistler for a short getaway is that once you’re in the village you can park the car and walk almost everywhere.

Where to Stay in Whistler

For a splurge or romantic weekend, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is hard to beat, particularly if you’re skiing. Its location at the base of Blackcomb is excellent.

If you’d rather compare a few options, check current Whistler hotel prices and availability here.

Best time to go: December through March for skiing and June through September for hiking, biking and lake days. Spring and fall are quieter and can offer considerably better hotel rates.

2. Bowen Island

Best for: Easy island escapes and romantic weekends
Travel time: About 20 minutes by ferry from Horseshoe Bay, plus travel to the terminal
Recommended stay: 1–2 nights

Bowen Island is probably the easiest way to make it feel like you’ve properly escaped Vancouver without actually going very far. The ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay to Snug Cove is short, but stepping off the boat already feels like you’ve left the city behind.

Spend some time around Snug Cove, head for the beaches, walk around Killarney Lake or tackle Mount Gardner if you’re looking for a more substantial hike. Bowen works particularly well when you only have one night and don’t want to lose half your weekend sitting in the car.

Where to Stay on Bowen Island

Bowen Island has more cottages, cabins, inns and vacation rentals than traditional hotels. For a weekend away we’d look for something around Snug Cove or, even better, a waterfront property where the accommodation itself becomes part of the getaway.

Browse places to stay on Bowen Island.

3. Squamish, BC

Best for: Hiking, climbing, mountain biking and outdoor adventure
Travel time: About 1 hour
Recommended stay: 1–2 nights

If we’d rather spend a weekend outside than sitting around a resort, Squamish is one of our first choices. It’s close enough that you don’t waste much of the weekend getting there, but the mountains make it feel much farther from Vancouver.

The Sea to Sky Gondola gives you incredible views over Howe Sound without requiring a full-day hike. For something more challenging, the Stawamus Chief is the classic Squamish hike. Alice Lake Provincial Park is a good option when you’re after something more relaxed.

Squamish is also one of Canada’s best-known climbing destinations, with mountain biking, paddling, rafting and countless hiking trails nearby.

Where to Stay in Squamish

The Executive Suites Hotel and Resort Squamish is a good option if you want something more comfortable than a basic roadside hotel, with spacious suites and a great location for exploring the area.

4. Harrison Hot Springs

Best for: Relaxation, couples and lake views
Travel time: Around 2 hours
Recommended stay: 1–2 nights

Harrison River Valley

Harrison Hot Springs works particularly well when you’re looking for a relaxing weekend and don’t want to spend hours getting there. The small resort community sits at the southern end of Harrison Lake and has been known for its hot springs for generations.

Walk along the lakefront, get out on the water during summer, explore nearby trails and then give yourself permission to do very little for the rest of the day. Sometimes that’s exactly what a weekend away should look like.

Where to Stay in Harrison Hot Springs

Harrison Hot Springs Resort is the classic option if the hot springs are the main reason for your visit. Harrison Beach Hotel is another convenient choice right across from the lake.

5. Victoria, BC

Victoria Weekend Getaways from Vancouver
Victoria Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

Best for: Restaurants, history, gardens and a walkable city weekend
Travel time: Allow around 3–4 hours including ferry travel
Recommended stay: 2 nights

Victoria feels like a genuine vacation even when you only have a couple of nights. Getting there takes longer than the map suggests because of the drive to Tsawwassen, the ferry to Swartz Bay and the drive into the city, but the ferry ride is part of the experience.

Once downtown, Victoria is wonderfully walkable. Start around the Inner Harbour before exploring downtown, Chinatown and the waterfront. The Royal BC Museum, Parliament Buildings and historic architecture give this getaway a very different feel from the mountain destinations on this list.

If you have a vehicle, Butchart Gardens is an easy addition. Victoria is also one of our favorite choices when food is a major part of the weekend, so leave some time for coffee shops, pubs and restaurants rather than trying to schedule every hour.

Where to Stay in Victoria

The Fairmont Empress is the iconic choice overlooking the Inner Harbour. You’ll also find plenty of boutique hotels and B&Bs around downtown and James Bay.

6. The Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Weekend Getaways from Vancouver
Sunshine Coast Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

Best for: Coastal scenery, kayaking and slowing down
Travel time: About 40 minutes by ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, plus driving
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights

The Sunshine Coast is close to Vancouver geographically, but having to take a ferry makes it feel nicely separated from the city. Once you arrive at Langdale you can explore Gibsons, Roberts Creek, Sechelt and the smaller communities farther north.

This isn’t somewhere we’d try to race through. Explore beaches, paddle protected water, hike through coastal forest, stop at local breweries and restaurants and leave enough time to simply sit somewhere overlooking the water.

Kayaking around Sechelt Inlet is particularly good, and there are plenty of waterfront cabins and cottages if you’d rather make the accommodation itself part of the getaway.

Where to Stay on the Sunshine Coast

The Painted Boat Resort Spa & Marina near Madeira Park is a great upscale option if you’re willing to continue farther up the coast.

For a two-night trip we’d probably stay around Gibsons or Sechelt. With three nights, going farther north becomes much more worthwhile.

7. Salt Spring Island

Salt Spring Island Weekend Getaways from Vancouver
Salt Spring Island Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

Best for: Markets, food, art and laid-back island life
Travel time: Around 2.5–3.5 hours depending on ferry connections
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights

Of all the Southern Gulf Islands, Salt Spring is probably our easiest recommendation for a first visit. There’s enough to do to comfortably fill a weekend while still retaining that slow Gulf Islands pace.

Ganges is the main hub and a good place to start. Browse the shops and galleries, grab something to eat and, if you’re visiting when it’s running, explore the Salt Spring Saturday Market.

But don’t spend the whole weekend in town. Drive around the island, stop at farm stands, wineries and beaches, and spend some time along the coast at Ruckle Provincial Park.

We’ve put together a full guide to the best things to do on Salt Spring Island if you’re planning a trip.

Where to Stay on Salt Spring Island

The Hastings House Country House Hotel is one of the island’s more luxurious choices and works particularly well for a special weekend away.

You’ll also find cottages, B&Bs and some great Salt Spring Island glamping options.

Browse Salt Spring Island accommodations.

8. Pemberton, BC

Best for: Mountain scenery and a quieter alternative to Whistler
Travel time: Around 2.5 hours
Recommended stay: 2 nights

Continue about half an hour beyond Whistler and the landscape opens into the beautiful Pemberton Valley. Pemberton feels noticeably different from Whistler. It’s smaller, quieter and more agricultural, while still being surrounded by huge Coast Mountain scenery.

It’s a great choice when hiking, mountain biking and simply being outside are higher priorities than shopping and nightlife. You can also stop in Whistler on the way there or back, giving you two very different Sea-to-Sky experiences in one weekend.

Where to Stay in Pemberton

Pemberton Valley Lodge is one of the most convenient places to base yourself, while cabins and vacation rentals outside town work well if you’re after more space and mountain views.

9. Okanagan Valley

Okanagan Valley Weekend Getaways from Vancouver
Okanagan Valley Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

Best for: Wine, warm weather and lake days
Travel time: Around 4–5 hours to Kelowna
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights

The Okanagan stretches the definition of a weekend getaway a little farther, but it earns a place on this list when you’ve got a long weekend or can leave Vancouver early.

Kelowna makes an easy base, but don’t limit yourself to the city. The valley is filled with wineries, orchards, beaches and smaller communities scattered around Okanagan Lake.

Wine is obviously one of the major reasons to visit. Take a look at our guide to wine tasting in the Okanagan Valley as well as our favorite Naramata Bench wineries.

Naramata and Penticton are particularly good choices for a wine-focused weekend, while Kelowna offers the biggest selection of restaurants, hotels and activities.

Where to Stay in the Okanagan

Sparkling Hill Resort is a great choice if you want to turn the weekend into a proper spa escape.

If wine is the priority, consider staying around Penticton or Naramata instead of Kelowna so you’re closer to the wineries you plan to visit.

10. Tofino, BC

Tofino Weekend Getaways from Vancouver
Tofino Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

Best for: Wild beaches, surfing, rainforest and storm watching
Travel time: Around 6 hours once ferry and driving time are included
Recommended stay: Ideally 3 nights

Tofino is the farthest getaway on this list, and we’d hesitate to recommend making the trip for only one night. Give yourself at least two nights and preferably three.

The reward is one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in British Columbia. Long beaches, temperate rainforest and the open Pacific give Tofino an atmosphere that’s completely different from Vancouver.

Explore the beaches and rainforests of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, take a surf lesson, go kayaking or head out on a wildlife tour.

And don’t dismiss Tofino outside summer. Fall and winter bring dramatic Pacific storms, which makes storm watching an attraction in its own right.

Where to Stay in Tofino

Beachfront resorts are worth the splurge here because being right on the coast is such a big part of the Tofino experience. Pacific Sands Beach Resort and Long Beach Lodge Resort are both excellent locations to check.

There are also cabins, smaller lodges and some memorable Vancouver Island glamping options near Tofino.

Check Tofino hotels and current availability.

11. The Southern Gulf Islands

Best for: Quiet beaches, cycling and getting away from everything
Travel time: Varies by island and ferry
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights

Salt Spring gets its own spot on this list because there’s so much to do there, but it isn’t your only option in the Southern Gulf Islands. Galiano, Mayne and Pender are all great choices when you’re looking for somewhere even quieter.

These islands generally have less going on than Salt Spring, and that’s exactly the appeal. Bring hiking shoes and a good book, find a quiet beach or trail, stop at local markets and restaurants and enjoy having nowhere particularly important to be.

For a first trip we’d probably choose Galiano or Pender Island.

Browse Gulf Islands accommodations.

12. Seattle, Washington

Best for: Food, markets, museums and a city weekend
Travel time: Around 2.5–3 hours without major border delays
Recommended stay: 2 nights

Yes, we’re crossing the border for the last one. Seattle is close enough to Vancouver to make an excellent weekend trip while feeling considerably different from staying within BC.

Pike Place Market is the obvious starting point, but we’d also make time for neighborhoods outside downtown. Ballard, Fremont and Capitol Hill each offer a different side of the city.

Seattle also works particularly well when the weather makes a hiking or island weekend less appealing. Museums, restaurants, breweries, coffee shops and indoor attractions mean a rainy forecast doesn’t have to ruin the trip.

The one thing to watch is the border. On busy weekends the drive can take considerably longer than Google Maps suggests.

How to Choose Your Vancouver Weekend Getaway

With this many options, we’d choose based less on which destination is supposedly the best and more on how much time you actually have.

  • One night: Bowen Island, Squamish or Harrison Hot Springs.
  • Two nights: Whistler, Victoria, Salt Spring Island, Sunshine Coast or Pemberton.
  • Three nights or a long weekend: Tofino or the Okanagan Valley.

Best Romantic Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

For couples, we’d put Whistler, Salt Spring Island and Harrison Hot Springs near the top of the list. Whistler gives you great hotels, restaurants and mountain scenery. Salt Spring is quieter and more intimate, while Harrison is ideal when the goal is mostly to relax.

For something even easier, book a cabin or waterfront stay on Bowen Island and call it a weekend.

Best Weekend Trips from Vancouver Without a Ferry

  • Squamish
  • Whistler
  • Pemberton
  • Harrison Hot Springs
  • Okanagan Valley
  • Seattle

The Sea-to-Sky Highway also makes it easy to combine Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton into one longer weekend road trip.

Best Island Getaways from Vancouver

For an island weekend we’d choose Bowen Island for convenience, Salt Spring Island for the most things to do, and Galiano or Pender when the goal is peace and quiet.

Tips for Taking BC Ferries on a Weekend Getaway

Several of our favorite Vancouver getaways involve BC Ferries, including Victoria, Bowen Island, the Sunshine Coast, Salt Spring Island and the other Southern Gulf Islands.

If you’re taking a vehicle on a reservable route during summer or a holiday weekend, check ferry schedules and reservation options before you book the rest of the trip. Friday afternoons and Sunday returns can be especially busy.

We also recommend looking at the current BC Ferries schedules rather than relying on old travel times in blogs, since schedules and seasonal sailings change.

When Is the Best Time for a Weekend Getaway from Vancouver?

There really isn’t one best season because the destinations around Vancouver change so much throughout the year.

  • Spring: Victoria, Salt Spring Island, Bowen Island and the Sunshine Coast are particularly good.
  • Summer: Almost everything on this list works, especially the islands, Sea-to-Sky corridor, Okanagan and Tofino.
  • Fall: September can still bring beautiful weather with fewer crowds, while the Okanagan enters harvest season.
  • Winter: Whistler shines for skiing, Harrison makes a relaxing escape, Tofino is great for storm watching and Victoria or Seattle work well for city weekends.

What to Pack for a Weekend Getaway from Vancouver

Kayaking in BC
Kayaking in BC

You don’t need a completely different packing list for every destination. BC weather changes quickly enough that the same basics cover most weekend trips.

  • Layers for changing temperatures
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Proper hiking footwear if you’re heading onto trails
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small backpack or daypack
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Phone charger and portable power bank

Even during summer, we’d throw a light jacket in the car. There’s a pretty good chance you’ll eventually use it.

Making the Most of Your Weekend

Relaxing Weekend Getaways from Vancouver
Relaxing Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

The biggest mistake with a weekend trip is trying to go too far or squeeze too much into two days. If you’ve only got one night, choose somewhere close. With two or three nights, then it starts making sense to tackle the ferry trips and longer drives.

We’d also avoid planning every hour. Some of our favorite moments on BC road trips have come from stopping somewhere we hadn’t planned, finding a local restaurant or simply spending longer than expected at a beach or viewpoint.

Final Thoughts on Weekend Getaways from Vancouver

One of Vancouver’s biggest advantages is that you don’t need a plane ticket or a week off to feel like you’ve actually gone somewhere.

For a spontaneous overnight trip, we’d choose Bowen Island, Squamish or Harrison Hot Springs. With a full two-night weekend, Whistler, Victoria, the Sunshine Coast or Salt Spring Island would be near the top of our list. And if we could stretch things to three nights, we’d happily make the longer trip to Tofino or the Okanagan.

The trick is simply matching the destination to the amount of time you have. Pick somewhere close enough that getting there doesn’t become the main event, leave a little room for spontaneity and enjoy just how much of British Columbia you can reach from Vancouver in a single weekend.
